Words With Friends for Android updated, promises “smoother game experience”

Posted By: admin on May 20, 2012 at 8:10 am

wordswithfriends

As several of you noted in the comments to our post asking for cross-platform iOS/Android games, Words With Friends for Android does not provide the smoothest gaming experience… and that’s being rather charitable.

You might be happy to hear that a couple of days ago Zynga released an update which promises to solve many of the Android-specific issues, such as notifications not popping up.

Sadly, installing the update is not a smooth experience; you have to manually uninstall the previous version, and then go to the Android Market and install it. What’s nice is that it doesn’t lose your saved games – this screenshot shows a game I’ve started before the update and continued after updating.

How’s the new update working out for you? Let us know in the comments!

ITC orders import ban on Motorola Android phones over Microsoft patent issues

Posted By: admin on May 20, 2012 at 4:11 am

RAZR MAXX

Update: More of the story is coming out, and we learn that Motorola was found not to infringe on eight other patents in the case. This verdict is currently under Presidential review, and will be subject to appeal. In a statement to ArsTechnica Motorola has said the following:

Although we are disappointed by the Commission’s ruling that certain Motorola Mobility products violated one patent, we look forward to reading the full opinion to understand its reasoning. Motorola Mobility will not experience any impact in the near term, as the Commission's ruling is subject to a $0.33/per unit bond during the 60 day Presidential review period. We will explore all options including appeal.

The original story follows.

HTC's One X and EVO 4G LTE may soon have a few friends to keep them company while they wait for customs to allow them into the US, as the ITC has decided to ban the import of Motorola Android phones for infringing on a Microsoft patent for "generating meeting requests and group scheduling from a mobile device". According to FOSS Patents, this order will likely go into effect in 60 days, as the ITC has rejected Google's claims that an exclusion order was not in the public's best interests. Because of FOSS Patents owner Florian Mueller's close ties to Microsoft and his track record on proceedings of this type, we're awaiting on an official word from both sides to see just how damaging this decision may be before we make any predictions. It's very likely that Motorola can just tweak a setting and comply with the ITC's rulings while they await a full judgment.

If you recall, Motorola has been embroiled in legal disputes with Microsoft while other big players have decided to pay licensing fees to stay out of court. Sometimes this strategy will work, sometimes it backfires. In the end innovation gets stifled by patents on ideas instead of methods, and consumers always lose. More on this as it comes forth.

Microsoft patent application outlines system to recommend and transfer apps across devices

Posted By: admin on May 20, 2012 at 1:11 am

Microsoft patent application for app transfers

Ready for your latest tour through the dense and meandering wording of patent applications? Well, dig in, because it’s Microsoft’s turn to confuse lawyers the world over with this latest USPTO doc, submitted in November of 2010. The filing describes a computer-based program that would, essentially, analyze a primary device’s installed applications, cross-reference it with a different device and then either migrate that software batch or suggest similar apps to download on a secondary unit. Sounds a lot like a potential Windows Phone Marketplace recommendation / app transfer engine to us, but what exactly Redmond intends to use this pending patent for is anyone’s guess. As always, if you care to sacrifice a few minutes of your life to mind-numbing legal jargon, then by all means hit up the source link below.

Zero Motorcycles will pay for your first 25,000 e-motorbike miles, wants you to ride guilt-free

Posted By: admin on May 19, 2012 at 11:11 pm

Zero DS

If you’ve been staring lustfully at an electric motorcycle but needed that little extra push to make the jump, Zero Motorcycles has a unique incentive in store: it’ll pay for your first 25,000 miles on the road. Should you take the keys to any one of the company’s two-wheelers between now and the end of May, you’ll get a Visa gift card for the amount within a few weeks. Of course, the reason it can make such a seemingly generous offer is through the sheer efficiency of an electric engine: at a typical 10 cents for every kilowatt-hour, you’re looking at just under $200 for what’s likely several years of driving, even if you’re particularly enthusiastic. Knowing that riding the same amount with a gas-powered bike practically requires taking out a small mortgage in the current economy, though, we’d say that Zero is just reminding us of an an advantage e-motorbikes already have.

Airports Will Steal Summer’s Heat to Thaw Frozen Winter Runways [Airplanes]

Posted By: admin on May 19, 2012 at 5:11 pm

The winter months are some of the busiest travel times of the year, but they’re also the most likely time for an airplane to be delayed. The culprit? Icy runways. Wouldn’t it be nice and efficient if we could take some of the excess summer heat, save it, and use it to thaw out airports in the winter? Some of the busiest airports in the world are considering doing just that. More »
